At TCLA, we’re constantly trying to crack ‘commercial awareness’. How do we take those of you who are new to commercial law and teach you about business and the financial markets? How do we develop your ability to think commercially so that you can understand how world events might impact a client’s business? How do we help you to ace some of the hardest commercial interviews?

There are three parts to this course.

1. Our Weekly Report has been designed to develop your understanding of topical commercial news. Every Wednesday, the TCLA team breaks down one topic which we believe will be most relevant to your commercial interviews. This includes examining why it's in the news and the impact across different sectors.

2. Within TCLA's Interview Guides, we're also releasing a series of our best interview guides to help you prepare for the most challenging interview questions at commercial law firms.

This section starts with TCLA's Guide to Private Equity, which aims to provide you with the information you need to excel at private equity focused interviews and to teach you about private equity in an easy-to-understand manner.

Structured through a series of practice interview questions, you’ll gain an understanding of private equity and learn how to articulate your answers to some of the trickiest interview questions.

This guide will also be useful if you are beginning a vacation scheme at one of these firms, or if you want to express an interest in private equity at a general interview, and seek to be able to handle possible follow-up interview questions.

3. Within our Long-Form Articles, TCLA writer Matthew Dow provides a high-level breakdown of the most important news within the financial services sector.

In the first series, you'll learn about the replacement of LIBOR, described by analysts as the 'world's most important number in the financial system', the interbank lending market and the impact of the transition on lawyers.

In the second series, you'll gain a high level understanding of activist investors and their role within the financial markets. This includes learning about the relationships between shareholders and directors, how activists seek to influence change within companies, how companies seek to defend themselves, and the causes behind the sudden emergence of activist shareholders.
